WattShare

WattShare is a software solution for social energy sharing, developed during the Avisi 36h Hackathon. Our custom matching algorithm connects vulnerable households with businesses with surplus energy and won first place (€2,000) for most impactful solution.

WattShare

Winner Avisi 36h Hackathon

WattShare is a socially driven software solution developed during the 36-hour hackathon “Social Energy Sharing,” organized by Avisi, ENTRNCE, and Energiebank at the WTC Arnhem. Together with Yassine Abderrazik and Mathijs de Niet, I won first place for Most Impactful Solution, including a €2,000 prize.

Problem

The societal challenge: energy poverty

The hackathon was prompted by a pressing problem: in 2023, over 400,000 Dutch households struggled to pay their energy bills, a figure that will rise to over 550,000 in 2025 without intervention. At the same time, many households and businesses generate more electricity than they consume. With the introduction of the new Energy Act (2026) and the elimination of the net metering scheme (2027), the need for smart solutions for energy sharing has arisen.

WattShare

The solution

WattShare is a working prototype that connects vulnerable households with households and businesses with surplus energy. At the heart of the solution is a custom Python matching algorithm that enables fair and effective electricity distribution based on multiple factors. The goal is to make energy sharing social, scalable, and attractive to all parties involved.

Algorithm

Technical implementation

The application consists of a Python matching algorithm and a dashboard built with React and TypeScript, styled with Bootstrap (SCSS). Apache ECharts was used for data insights and visualizations. During the hackathon, we worked with realistic datasets and continuously optimized the algorithm for performance and impact.

According to the jury, WattShare distinguished itself through its combination of technical depth, realistic applicability, and societal impact. The success of this hackathon has led Avisi and ENTRNCE to announce that they will repeat the event in the future, focusing on new societal challenges.

2024 edition (3rd place)

In 2024, I participated in the Avisi 36h Hackathon together with Yassine Abderrazik, Mathijs de Niet, and Adel Atzouza. During this year’s hackathon, we developed LearnFlow, a new student monitoring system for MBO RijnIJssel, built with PHP. This project earned us third place thanks to its combination of technical implementation and direct applicability in education.
